Introduction

You may have heard certain terms such as "Uber" and "NU" at some point, especially when it comes to battles. These terms are used to categorise certain Pokemon depending on their overall rating/skill in a battle. This page will provide you with information on what categories there are and the meaning of each category.


The Tiers:

* Ubers
* Overused (OU)
* Borderline (BL)
* Underused (UU)
* Never used (NU)


Ubre

Ubers are normally banned from the standard battles, as they are too powerful compared to the other tiers. First off you may think that the 'Legendary' Pokemon must all be 'Ubers' then but that is not the case. Some 'Legendaries' are deemed weaker or less skilful than others and therefore are not classified as an uber. However there are 'Non-Legendary' ubers - wobbeffet and garchomp. This is because their overall stats are just too high for the standard battle.

OU

The OU's are the majority of Pokemon used in the standard battle. It is given the term 'Overused' because they are the most commonly used pokemon overall in battles.

BL

Borderline Pokemon are not strong enough to be classified as 'OU' however they are stronger compared to the tiers below.

UU

Underused is the name given to the Pokemon not often used in battles. They are are seen as 'weaker' than the standard Pokemon used for battling.

NU

These Pokemon are hardly ever used as they are just too weak compared to the other tiers, and don't do well in battles.


Conclusion

On general if someone requests a battle, one would assume that no ubers will be used unless stated otherwise. This is known as the standard battle. You can also request a specific battle, for an example a 'NU battle' is for never used Pokemon only. This is useful for when you want to use a team that will have a fair chance against your opponent's team.
