Introduction

The Pokemon you choose for your team are very important in battles. Good Pokemon battling is not only about the Pokemon you choose but the techniques you have too. The combination of Types, Moves, Stats and Abilities determines the uniqueness of each Pokemon. A Pokemon's Role in the team also plays an important part as it's the strategy that leads to the success.

The 3 main roles in Pokemon Teams are as follows:-

* Sweepers
* Walls
* Support

The information given below provides a further insight into each Role in a Pokemon Team.


Sweepers


Sweepers are Pokemon that either have a high Attack or Special Attack stat. Most have a high Speed stat too. They are mostly used to try and KO your opponents Pokemon as fast as possible. However most sweepers are fragile.

Physical Sweepers - only use Physical moves (+ effect moves) and therefore don't depend on the Special Attack stat. The most common natures for physical sweepers are adamant and jolly nature.

Some Examples of Physical Sweepers are:-

Aerodactyl, Salamence, Garchomp, Heracross, Gyarados, Electivire and Gallade.

Special Sweepers - only Special moves (+ effect moves) and therefore don't depend on the Attack stat. The most common natures for special sweepers are modest and timid nature.

Some Examples of Special Sweepers are:-

Alakazam, Porygon Z, Jolteon, Espeon, Gengar, Roserade, Starmie and Yanmega.

Mixed Sweepers- Are Pokemon with a decent value of both offensive stats. The two offensive stats are usually around the same level.

Some Examples of Mixed Sweepers are:-

Infernape and Lucario


Walls


Walls are Pokemon that either have a high Defence or Special Defence stat. They also usually have a high HP stat. Along with a recovery move, and status inducing moves to try and weaken the opponent’s team.

Physical Walls - The main function of a Physical Wall is to defend your team from Physical Sweepers. They have a strong Defence stat and are also usually high HP.

Some Examples of Physical Walls are:-

Steelix, Forretress, Gliscor, Skarmory, Rhyperior and Tangrowth.

Special Walls - The main function of a Special Wall is to defend your team from Special Sweepers. They have a strong Special Defence stat and are also usually high HP.

Some Examples of Special Walls are:-

Blissey, Milotic, Tentacruel and Togekiss.

Mixed Walls - Are Pokemon with a decent value of both defensive stats. The two defensive stats are usually around the same level.

Some Examples of Special Walls are:-

Umbreon, Dusknoir, Spiritomb, Bronzong, Shuckle and Hippowdon.


Supporters


Supporters normally have a high Speed or defensive stat so they can do their job before being KO'd. They're basically used to try and take the advantage of the battle. Supporter Pokemon moves are mostly about the strategy.

Baton Passers - These Pokemon are used to raise certain stats and then pass them on using a certain move called Baton Pass. This gives the next Pokemon the power of the risen stats.

Some Examples of Button Passers are:-

Ninjask and Umbreon.

Healers - These Pokemon use moves like Aromatherapy to cure the whole team. Leech Seed is also a healing move used.

Some Examples of Healers are:-

Blissey, Jumpluff, Meganium and Miltank.

Spikers - Spikers use the moves Spikes, Stealth Rock and Toxic Spikes to weaken the opponent's team by taking damage to the pokemon switching in.

Some Examples of Spikers are:-

Skarmory, Cloyster and Forretress.

Hazers - Mostly used against Baton Passers to erase any stat boosts before they pass them on to the next Pokemon.

Some Examples of Hazers are:-

Weezing and Vaporeon.

Rapid Spinners - Spinners are Pokemon that use the move Rapid Spin to remove certain moves such as Spikes, Stealth Rock, Toxic Spikes and Leech Seed.

Some Examples of Rapid Spinners are:-

Starmie, Forretress, Blastoise and Hitmontop.
